The 6mm Corten steel sheet, also known as weathering steel, is a high-strength, low alloy carbon steel renowned for its distinctive rust-like appearance and exceptional weather resistance. This durable steel undergoes a natural weathering process that not only gives it a striking aesthetic but also enhances its durability, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications.  At Buy Metal Online, we offer 6mm Corten steel sheets in various sizes, all available with a free cutting service to ensure the perfect fit for your project needs.

About 6mm corten steel

Corten steel develops a stable, rust-like appearance after 3-10 months of exposure to the elements. This natural oxidation process produces a rich, orange-brown patina that protects the underlying metal from further corrosion. The 6mm Corten steel sheet is specifically designed for projects where strength, durability, and a distinctive finish are desired. As a weathering steel, 6mm Corten is made from an alloy that includes nickel, copper, and chromium. These elements allow the steel to form a protective layer that gives its iconic appearance and shields it from the harsh effects of weather without requiring any treatments. Unlike traditional steel, Corten steel doesn’t need painting or additional coatings to protect it from the elements, resulting in a low-maintenance, long-lasting material that’s particularly popular in construction and design.

Key properties of 6mm Corten steel sheets:

  • Formability: Good
  • Weldability: Good
  • Machinability: Excellent
  • Corrosion Resistance: Fair (enhanced by the weathered patina)
Please note, your 6mm Corten steel sheet will arrive in its natural, raw grey state and will begin to develop its iconic rust-like finish once exposed to the outdoors. If you prefer a pre-rusted appearance, we also offer pre-weathered Corten steel sheets.

Benefits of 6mm corten steel sheet

There are numerous benefits to using 6mm Corten steel sheets:
  • Aesthetic Appeal: The distinct rusted look makes it highly desirable for architectural and decorative projects.
  • Weatherproof: The natural patina that forms on the surface provides effective protection against further rust and corrosion from the elements, making it a durable choice for outdoor installations.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike other metals, 6mm Corten steel sheets don’t require painting, coating, or additional treatments, saving time and costs on upkeep.
  • Hard-Wearing: 6mm corten steel sheet is tough and durable, with a longer lifespan compared to ordinary steel.
  • Long Lifespan: The protective layer that develops means that Corten steel can outlast regular steel in outdoor conditions, making it a more economical option over time.
  • Sustainability: Corten steel's longevity and low maintenance requirements make it an environmentally friendly choice.
These benefits make 6mm Corten steel sheets a great option for both commercial and domestic use, appealing to architects, builders, artists, and DIY enthusiasts alike.

What our customers say about us: “Great value, fast and efficient. We wanted to fabricate Corten steel doors and this company shipped metal really quickly to Northern Scotland, a part of the world which many companies refuse to deliver to. The fact that they will send large sheets of steel here is greatly appreciated. The Corten steel panels cost was also very reasonable. I will definitely not hesitate or shop around next time, I will Buymetalonline.” – Peter Thompson, Trustpilot, December 2015. Random Fact: The most famous Corten steel building is the Barclay Centre in Brooklyn, New York, which is made of 12,000 weathering steel panels.

Weathered Corten

Corten steel is also known as weathering steel, or COR-TEN steel. It is specially formulated to provide the strength and stability of traditional steel with an attractive patina. A thin layer of oxide forms on the outside surface of the steel, giving it that attractive burnt orange colour of rust. This layer is thin and does not affect the material’s strength or longevity which is why it is so popular. In fact, that oxidised layer helps to protect the material from the elements and negates the need for finishing, which is why it was invented in the first place! Buy Metal Online sells top grade pre-weathered Corten steel sheet in various thicknesses and sizes. We can cut the sheet into custom size if required. Select the next size up from your required dimensions and request custom cutting on the order form. We will take care of the rest!

How is Corten Steel Manufactured?

Corten steel is manufactured in a foundry, rolled into sheets and cut to size. It is then coated with a special oil mixture that helps create the oxidisation. The oil naturally dries and breaks down, turning to rust. This process can take anywhere between 3 to 10 months and will gradually deepen in colour and character.

Benefits of Rusted Corten Steel

The advantage of buying weathered Corten steel is that you don’t need to wait for 3 - 10 months to enjoy the amazing colour and texture of Corten. This is especially relevant if you are planning on using Corten for interior decorating.

Common Uses

Corten steel is a flexible architectural material that works exceptionally well in many situations. Prime examples of where Corten steel shines is in building facades, architectural installations, garden pieces, public monuments, sculptures or civil engineering projects. Many gardens feature Corten steel, it provides a rustic look that appears completely natural, fitting into a garden theme perfectly. Corten steel can be used as:
  • Coverings or facades for buildings.
  • Roofs and decorative features.
  • Garden ornaments or installations.
  • Larger engineering projects.
Sir Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North in Gateshead is probably the most famous example of Corten steel. The Crystal Palace Concert Platform in London or Royal Shakespeare Company’s Courtyard Theatre are also excellent examples of where the material is used to great effect. 1. Please Note: Corten products can arrive at any stage of weathering. We cannot guarantee what level they will be or even if multiple items ordered at the same time will all be at the same level. Unweathered areas of your stairs will be the colour of freshly manufactured steel, with a dark oily coating.
  2. As your Corten Steel stairs begin to weather, the oily residue will break down.
  3. Your stairs will begin to change gradually to uniform orange-brown. Please be aware that ‘run-off’ may stain stone or concrete surfaces and bear this in mind when deciding where to place your stairs.
  4. After 9 months, your stairs should be almost entirely rust-coloured. Please be aware that run-off may still occur for several months after the uniform rust colour has been achieved.

These versatile and elegant bowls make a beautiful focal point on patios, terraces and lawns. Tip: add a few drops of black dye to the water inside your bowl to create an ultra-reflective surface.

Key Features

  • Self-protecting rust finish develops over time.

  • Easy to install.
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Made from high quality Corten steel
  • Dimensions are length x width x height
  • The Corten steel water bowls come in a thickness of 2mm , except the bowls sized 1500mm and above, which are made with 4mm thick steel.

Get your garden into the festive spirit with our bespoke Corten Christmas trees!

Carefully handcrafted in 3mm thick Corten Steel, our Corten Christmas trees are free standing and extra stylish. Corten steel plate might look like it’s rusty, but thanks to clever manipulation in its processing, the outer oxidisation actually protects the steel from further corrosion – meaning your tree can last for years and years! The Corten Christmas trees arrive in the natural grey finish and they will then rust over time. Left out in the elements it takes a few days to see them start to weather then up to 6 months to rust fully and seal. During the weathering period, it is recommended to keep the trees outside as the rust can transfer and may stain garments. To keep your mind at rest – all Corten trees are deburred meaning the edges are not sharp, so they are safe for children and pets. Don’t forget: Corten trees are for life, not just for Christmas! Leave them in the garden to look great all year round. Contact us today for your bespoke price on sales@buymetalonline.co.uk or 0191 2646464.

Special offer - 30% discount on all 5mm thickness variants! If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Corten steel, weathering steel could be perfect for your project. Weathering steel possesses the same great properties as Corten steel, but as it doesn't carry the brand name, it costs less. Just like Corten, weathering steel starts out blue-grey in colour and weathers to a rust-coloured finish. The orange patina protects the metal from corrosion and takes 6-9 months to develop. Please note: these sheets will arrive in their natural form, ready to weather over a period of 6-9 months. If you need your steel to arrive with the orange coating already in place, see our pre-weathered Corten steel. When weathering steel is exposed to the elements, it reacts with oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere, a process called oxidisation. When oxidisation occurs, the metal develops a distinctive orange coating, known as a patina. This exterior coating protects the internal steel. While the auburn-hue might look like rust, it doesn't penetrate the steel, meaning the metal does not weaken or depreciate. With its good looks and lasting durability, weathering steel is a big hit with designers. Weathering steel is a more affordable choice than Corten steel for a broad range of projects, including landscaping, art and architecture We supply weathering steel panels in a huge variety of thicknesses and sizes and we can cut it to custom sizes, so you can just order what you need. How it’s made: Weathering steel is an alloy; the addition of nickel, copper and chromium at production means that as the steel is exposed to the elements it develops its protective patina. Good for: External cladding, marine projects, architecture, water features, outdoor planters, sculptures, design features, signage. Benefits:
  • Durable
  • Low maintenance
  • Weather-resistant
  • Visually pleasing
