Magnetic Boards & Magnetic Galvanised Steel Sheet
Noticeably useful
Our galvanised steel is perfect for notice boards, crafts and DIY projects. This magnetic board comes in a huge range of sizes, as it’s made from galvanised steel, it is equipped to handle all the weather elements making it a great for both indoor and outdoor projects.
Thinking of installing a notice board at home or in the office? Then our galvanised magnetic notice boards are perfect for you. Our customers use these for displaying photographs, children’s artwork, staff notices and important documents. The sheets are 1.0 mm thick. This product isn’t magnetic itself, so it won’t pick up metal objects, however it is the ideal thickness for both children’s magnets, industrial magnets and anything in between. Whether you’re looking to keep your bills in order, display your precious photographs or give your living room an industrial edge, the opportunities for magnetic boards are endless.
If you can’t see the size you’re looking for in the box above, just let us know; we’re always happy to cut to cut metal to size – and there’s no minimum order, so your magnetic notice board can be delivered just the size you want.
How it’s made: Galvanised steel is made when steel is fortified with a powerful layer of zinc. The metal is dipped in an extremely hot bath of molten zinc, which causes a chemical reaction, resulting in a protective layer of zinc which makes the finished product supremely tough. Whilst the zinc that’s added to steel in the galvanisation process is not magnetic, the steel itself is. The amount of zinc used is so little that it doesn’t affect the performance of the steel, meaning magnets will stick to it.
Good for: Notice boards, photography displays, shop displays, interiors or anywhere else where a surface that attracts magnets is required.
Painting: Galvanised steel can be coated in paint, but make sure you use a specialist product and primer.
Benefits:
- Attracts magnets
- Huge range of sizes available
- Free cutting service
- Sturdy and long-lasting

What is plastisol?
Very tough stuff
Plastisol is a PVC paint covering that dries to a smooth, durable coating. Our plastisol-coated steel sheet is made from hot-dipped galvanised steel substrate with an outer layer of plastisol that’s embossed with a leather-grain finish. This a brilliant all-rounder, suitable for use both inside and out. You get all the strength and longevity of galvanised steel with coating that’s incredibly versatile, stylish and tough. Originally developed for use in cladding and roofing, plastisol-coated metal is fast becoming one of engineering’s most sought-after materials. We supply ours in a variety of colours, all in 0.70mm thick, but we can offer different gauges if you let us know, plus we can cut your plastisol-coated galvanised steel to exactly the size you need. If you need your sheet metal to look good, resist colour fading and be amazingly resistant to corrosion, this is the one.
Colours available: White (00E55), Goosewing Grey (10A05), Hamlet (RAL 9002), Albatross (18B17), Merlin Grey (18B25), Moorland Green (12B21), Wedgewood Blue (18C37), Heritage Green (RAL 6002), Mushroom (10B19), Ocean Blue (18C39), Anthracite (RAL 7016), Olive Green (12B27), Sargasso (RAL 5003), Black (00E53), Juniper Green (12B29) and Vandyke Brown (08B29).
Good for: Construction, cladding, roofing, partitions, heating and ventilation, garage doors, garden planters, panels, interior and exterior design.
How it’s made: First, steel sheet is bathed in a hot bath of zinc, which toughens it against moisture and the elements. This process is galvanising and it’s what gives us galvanised steel. Next, the 200-micron PVC paint, Plastisol, is applied to the metals’ surface in its liquid form. To finish, the Plastisol outer layer is embossed with a leather-grain pattern. The outer plastic coating combined with the galvanisation produces a material that is equipped to resist the elements and any resulting corrosion.
Benefits:
- Superior corrosion resistance
- Excellent formability
- High resistance to abrasion

Rusted Hot-rolled Steel
A rustic patina
Our rusted hot-rolled steel makes an excellent alternative to the ever-popular Corten steel. The industrial aesthetic continues to be extremely popular in art, design and architecture, and as a result, demand for our Corten product is high. We have created a more affordable alternative to this much-loved product by adding a layer of decorative rust to the outer surface of our hot-rolled steel sheet. This means you get all the malleability and durability of hot-rolled steel, with the added benefit of a stylish orange hue. It’s worth bearing in mind that the rust effect is less uniform than that of Corten, but if you’re looking for a genuine patina, the overall effect of this finish is ideal. Our hot-rolled rusted steel is a wonderful choice for art and sculpture, where pliability is a must, but so are good looks. As with all our mild steel metals, it’s available in a huge choice of ready-cut sizes, and we can also cut it down to precisely the size you need for your project, however small, for free. There’s no minimum order, either, so whatever your project, we’ll supply you with just what you need.
Good for:
Landscaping, sculpture, art, architecture, garden accessories, blacksmithing, interior and exterior design, decorative panelling, architecture, cladding and many more.
How it’s made:
At the steel mill, ingots of mild steel are heated to a scorching 1000 degrees Celsius, then passed through two huge rollers to flatten them out into sheets. Rolling the steel out at such a high temperature makes it more malleable in the future than that which has been cold-rolled. At Buy Metal Online, we then use a chemical bath to rust the hot-rolled steel sheets, giving it the orangey hue that makes it stand out and look great.
Benefits:
- An affordable alternative to Corten
- Very malleable
- Has a distinctive, textured rust effect
- Extremely versatile

The Non-slip One
So good, they named it loads of times! Diamond plate, mild steel chequer plate, steel tread plate - whatever you call it, this is the metal you need when slip-resistance is a must. An icon of the metal world, treadplate is a time-served favourite when it comes to safety underfoot.
Thicknesses: 3mm, and 4.5mm thick sheet.
Health and safety is one of the most crucial considerations when it comes to construction, which is why diamond plate is always in demand. It's instantly recognisable by the smart, repetitive pattern of five-bar diamonds or lines that give it its brilliant grip. You've probably stepped over steel tread plate on walkways, stairs and in lifts. It's popular because it's safe and self-draining. Not only that, it’s really easy to clean, making it ultra hard-wearing. Made from hot-rolled steel, our chequer plate is embossed with a neat, raised pattern that not only offers excellent non-skid performance, but also looks good. In fact, diamond plate is so aesthetically pleasing that it is often used for walls and floors in a non-industrial setting. Also known as Durbar plate and checker plate, this mild steel sheet is a construction must-have. Like all our metals, we can custom-cut our tread plate to provide you with precisely what you need.
How is it made?
The raised pattern of lines, five bar chequers or diamonds that gives this metal its edge is embossed on to one side of the mild steel plate, leaving the reverse completely flat. This happens through a hot rolling process, which, through a combination of pressure and heat, permanently stamps the design into the metal’s surface.
Good for: Stairs, walkways, platforms, construction sites, bridges, ramps, play equipment, containers, lifts, shipbuilding, offshore installations, commercial vehicles, cladding and anywhere else that requires a safe, non-slip surface underfoot - or simply an iconic metallic pattern.
- Non-slip
- Easy-clean
- Iconic, industrial design

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Corten steel, weathering steel could be perfect for your project. Weathering steel possesses the same great properties as Corten steel, but as it doesn't carry the brand name, it costs less. Just like Corten, weathering steel starts out blue-grey in colour and weathers to a rust-coloured finish. The orange patina protects the metal from corrosion and takes 6-9 months to develop.
Please note: these sheets will arrive in their natural form, ready to weather over a period of 6-9 months. If you need your steel to arrive with the orange coating already in place, see our pre-weathered Corten steel.
When weathering steel is exposed to the elements, it reacts with oxygen and moisture in the atmosphere, a process called oxidisation. When oxidisation occurs, the metal develops a distinctive orange coating, known as a patina. This exterior coating protects the internal steel. While the auburn-hue might look like rust, it doesn't penetrate the steel, meaning the metal does not weaken or depreciate. With its good looks and lasting durability, weathering steel is a big hit with designers.
Weathering steel is a more affordable choice than Corten steel for a broad range of projects, including landscaping, art and architecture
We supply weathering steel panels in a huge variety of thicknesses and sizes and we can cut it to custom sizes, so you can just order what you need.
How it’s made:
Weathering steel is an alloy; the addition of nickel, copper and chromium at production means that as the steel is exposed to the elements it develops its protective patina.
Good for: External cladding, marine projects, architecture, water features, outdoor planters, sculptures, design features, signage.
Benefits:
- Durable
- Low maintenance
- Weather-resistant
- Visually pleasing

Zintec Steel Sheet
Tough against corrosion
What do you get when you cross mild steel with zinc? A durable, versatile metal that fares brilliantly in storage and transit. This is Zintec steel sheet and it’s one of the most popular metals for use in car bodies, electronics, white goods and a whole lot more. It’s just the job if you don’t quite need the weather-proof properties of galvanised steel, but you do need a steel sheet metal that won’t rust easily. Thanks to a clever electromagnetic process, the steel is covered in a thin layer of zinc, which makes it extra strong. It’s also smooth, making it an excellent base for enamelling and powder-coating.
Thicknesses: 0.7mm, 0.8mm, 0.9mm, 1mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, and 3mm thick sheet.
Zintec steel (sometimes known as zinc steel) is easy to recognise thanks to its distinctive matt, bluish-hued finish. Unlike galvanised steel sheet, this metal doesn’t tend to be used for outdoor projects, but it is still incredibly tough when it comes to avoiding corrosion. Far less likely to oxidise (and subsequently rust) in transit and while it’s waiting to be used, Zintec is a great option when you know your metal will spend time being stored or transported. Just like our other metal products, our Zintec Steel Sheet comes in an array of sizes and thicknesses. Even better, our free cutting service means you get to tell us exactly how much you need, with no minimum order.
How it’s made: Cold reduced (or cold-rolled) steel is electrolytically cleaned and pickled to make sure the surface is free of any residue or oxidisation. It is then electromagnetically plated with the thin layer of Zintec, which gives it its name and its resistance to corrosion.
Good for: Car body parts, white goods, cabinets and other furniture, electronics, doors, air conditioning units, automotive parts, enamelling and powder coating.
Benefits:
- Versatile
- Strong
- Travels well
- Won’t corrode in storage
