What is Raex
The Tough Stuff
If you’re looking for a steel sheet that’s extra heavy duty and resistant to wear, RAEX hardened steel is the metal you need. Boasting exceptional impact toughness, this industrial favourite extends the life of machines, reduces wear in structural parts and saves money in the long run. It’s also resistant to chemical corrosion and rust.
What’s more, RAEX’s choice of grades make innovative, lightweight products possible, decreasing fuel costs and upping energy efficiency. Exceptionally strong and durable, it’s no wonder that RAEX is used in mechanical engineering, mining, heavy lifting, transportation and vehicle manufacturing. Just because this metal is hardened, doesn’t mean it is difficult to work with. Although heat treatment isn’t an option (it would damage Raex’s abrasion-resistance), its weldability has been developed to be in the top class of wear-resistant steels available today.

Raex can also be cold-formed (up to 20mm in thickness) and drilled, where special safety measures are taken. Sold in thicknesses spanning from 2mm right up to 80mm, there’s a RAEX available to suit projects of every scale.
Good for:
Sharp cutting edges for earth-moving machinery,
Wear parts in mining
Concrete mixing and wood processing machines]
Containers,
Buckets,
Tipper bodies
Funnels, feeders, load-bearing platforms and more.
How it’s made:
Before any steel can be hardened, it needs to have a high carbon content, which ensures the structure of the metal can be changed. In order to be hardened, steel has to be heated to extremely high temperatures before being quenched (quickly cooled down) in a bath of oil, water or other liquid. Once this process has taken place, the steel is as hard as it’s going to get, but it’s also very brittle. This is where tempering comes in, and the metal is reheated until the perfect combination of hardness and toughness is reached. It is then quenched one more time to lock in the new properties
Benefits:
Very hard-wearing
Versatile
Cost-effective
Energy efficient
Random fact:
Despite its super-strength, RAEX can be drilled. The 400 grade can be drilled with HSS drills, whilst the 500 requires hard metal drills. Please note that special safety procedures must always be followed for the safe drilling of this extra-tough metal.
