What our customers say about us
What is spangled galvanised steel?
Spangled galvanised steel is a standard galvanised steel sheet with a little extra something special. It has all the same qualities as galvanised steel but has a sparkling snowflake pattern within the finish.
Spangled galvanised steel takes a very ordinary building material and adds a little decorative zing. It still has all the qualities you look for but with more aesthetic interest.
Galvanised steel is popular thanks to its ability to resist weather, the environment, chemicals, stains, rust and impact.
It’s a simple material used throughout the building industry and in manufacturing to deliver longevity and reliability.

What is spangled galvanised steel used for?
Spangled galvanised steel is a standard galvanised steel sheet with a little sparkle. It can perform any role standard galvanised steel can.
Those roles include being used extensively in building. It can be used to build steel frames, balconies, staircases, ladders, walkways, drainpipes, planters, ducting, fixtures and fittings and a whole lot more.
Galvanised steel is also used in vehicle manufacture, household appliances, electrical goods, wheelbarrows and anything that requires a tough material able to survive constant use unscathed.
Even though spangled steel looks great on its own, you can still paint it in the same way you can with standard galvanised steel. Use a suitable primer and paint and you’re good to go!
How is spangled galvanised steel made?
Spangled galvanised steel is created using standard steel sheet that’s passed through molten zinc. When exposed to oxygen, zinc oxide is formed. This, in turn, reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form zinc carbonate.
The spangles form naturally as the zinc cools and forms crystals that look like snowflakes.
The composition of those spangles depends on how the steel is cooled so we can control the size and density of the spangle effect.
Benefits of spangled galvanised steel
Galvanised steel has many benefits, including:
- Corrosion resistance
- Resistant to the elements
- Flexible as a building material
- Ideal for outdoor use
- Sustainable and long-lasting
- Predictable when used in building
Random fact about spangled galvanised steel
Galvanised steel is unusual in that it offers three layers of protection when used.
- The steel provides a metallurgically bonded physical barrier against corrosion and the elements
- The zinc coating is a sacrificial barrier designed to maintain the steel underneath for longer by gradually degrading so it protects the steel
- The tight bond between the steel and zinc protects the metal from just about any chemical or corrosion, including sideways creep
Spangled galvanised metal is available in sheet form and can be made to order. Contact Buy Metal Online to discuss or order online for fast delivery to your door.
